MCFB to take part in Refugee Festival

We are excited to be involved in two events as part of the Refugee Festival this year.

The first of these events has invovled linking in with the Festival of Cycling for the Scottish premiere screening of the documentary film, Afghan Cycles on 16 June at 7pm.  Afghan Cycles is a feature documentary about Afghan women who are pedalling their own revolution, challenging gender and cultural barriers by using the bicycle as a vehicle for freedom, empowerment and social change. We have received funding from the Scottish Refugee Festival to enable refugees and asylum seekers to attend the screening free of charge. We are also excited to be inviting one of the film's producers, Shannon Galpin, to meet some of our service users at a separate evening discussion to talk about the themes of the film and will be providing interpreting to and from Arabic to enable Arabic speaking service users to take part in discussions.  Tickets for Afghan Cycles can be booked on the Festival of Cycling website: https://edfoc.org.uk/events/afghan-cycles/.  There are also a limited number of tickets available to refugees and asylum seekers for the public screening on 16th June.  Please contact Philippa to find out more.

For the second event, we are partnering with the award winning science education specialist, Lewis Hou of ‘Science Ceilidh’ to put on a family friendly ‘MCFB science ceilidh’ in Leith.  Lewis Hou, who runs Science Ceilidh, takes some of the best loved ceilidh dances and adapts them to explain simple scientific concepts. The event will take place at South Leith Parish Church Halls on 21 June between 2 and 4pm. It is a free but ticketed event and is open to all families. Places can be booked on Eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/mcfb-science-ceilidh-tickets-61981930623. The event will provide arts, crafts and science based activities as well as some traditional (and not so traditional) dancing.
