Hate Crime - Remote ReportingMCFB is one of many agencies working with the Edinburgh Community Safety Partnership to counteract hate crime. Hate crime is a crime or incident committed against a person that is motivated by the perpetrator’s hatred of someone because of their perceived age, disability, race, faith, sexual orientation or gender. As MCFB works with many people from black and ethnic minority communities we are most likely to be involved with the victims of racist hate crime but will support anyone who has experienced any form of hate crime. Offences can include: name calling; physical attacks; criminal damage including graffiti and arson; intimidating behaviour such as threats to family and friends as well as emotional and psychological abuse and even murder. One of the proposals to tackle hate crime is to reduce the under reporting of hate crime/incidents by encouraging victims and/or witnesses to report a crime/incident to the Police or at a Remote Reporting Centre. MCFB is a Remote Reporting Centre. We would encourage victims of hate crime to report the crimes to the police and can offer support to them in doing so and during the investigative process. However in circumstances where victims are not willing to make a formal complaint we can still record their experiences to help build up a picture of what is happening and develop ways of making Edinburgh safe and welcoming for all residents and visitors. Anyone wishing to use the remote reporting facility can either come in to our office at 50 Coburg Street, Edinburgh which is open from 9.30 to 5 Monday to Friday, or phone us on 467 7052. You can find further information about the Edinburgh Community Safety Partnership and its approach to tackling hate crime, including the recently launched hate crime strategy “Take Control against Hate Crime”. |
