Bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade - Commemoration

Map of Jamaica with familiar Scottish placenames

In October 2007 MCFB hosted a public event to recollect the history of Leith and deepen our understanding of its part in the Slave Trade.

It is important for our society to remember the appalling suffering of so many people who were brutalized and enslaved and to recognise that our wealth and culture were built on the profits of that trade.

Exhibition at Commemorative Event

The event also commemorated the bravery of those who fought for Abolition.

MCFB have produced a commemorative booklet and DVD of the event, copies of which can be obtained using the details on the 'Contact Us' page.

Lunch at the event to commemorate 200 years since the abolition of the slave trade

The DVD gives both an historical outline of the Slave Trade in Leith and considers its relevance today - as well as capturing the mood of the day.

Lunch was provided by Sikh Sanjog, and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
