Early Years Service

In April 2006 Leith Sure Start Project merged with MCFB to provide an Early Years Service for families with pre-school children

The Early Years Service within MCFB aims to address the needs of vulnerable families with children aged 0-6.

It began life as Leith Sure Start Project in January 2001 in response to the Sure Start initiative, which emphasised this work as part of the Government's strategy to tackle child poverty and health inequalities in disadvantaged communities.

The aim of the Service is to work in partnership with parents and health and social care professionals to promote the emotional, physical, social and intellectual development of young children. We try to do this through joint and holistic assessment of children and families' needs, offering individual family support through home-based visits, play visits and group experiences for parents and children.

Our Service is delivered by a small staff team which includes staff with experience in social work, nursery nursing and infant mental health, bilingual play workers and social work students who are undertaking practice learning in the agency. We work closely with colleagues in community health, Child and Family Centres, nurseries and other voluntary and statutory agencies.

Due to funding parameters we are able to accept referrals from the Leith area for all families with young children: we also try to offer a city-wide service for Black and Minority Ethnic families who may have additional difficulty in accessing appropriate services.

Referrals may be made by colleagues working with the family and we welcome self-referrals. In all cases we require the family's consent to being approached by us.
