Art Therapy

“She saw me as a person who was special for the right reasons”

January 2007 was the start of our second year funded by Lloyds TSB Scotland.

From April 2006 to March 2007, our Art Therapist Sue du Porto, and Sarah (art therapy student from QMU) worked on an individual basis with two adults, two young people and six children. Most of our involvement has been long term, with the majority of people using the service for six months or more.

In June 2006, we organised five art therapy sessions for four children, girls and boys, aged 5 to 7. The focus of the group was to allow the children to explore each other's cultural and ethnic identity, as they all came from different backgrounds. In addition, Sarah also organised a number of art therapy sessions for the older Girls Group.

Apart from our involvement with groups at MCFB), we also ran two art therapy “taster” sessions for parent and toddler groups through our liaison with the Early Years Service. This gave us an opportunity to work with groups in the community and to explore whether there could be a future for regular art therapy sessions. Initial responses were positive with a feeling generally that it could be helpful to focus on issues like post-natal depression and the challenges of bringing up children. One of our aims for the coming year is to actively publicise and promote art therapy at MCFB, which we hope to do by a newly designed leaflet, website and presentations to colleagues and other professionals.
